September 17 and 18
The major art fairs that highlight both weekends of Take Me to the River offer exciting, energetic art experiences. But sometimes a more intimate art opportunity is just around the corner and allows a person to contemplate the relationship of art and nature. September 17 or 18 could be a day to explore these more subtle events.
Land, Sky, Water is the gallery exhibition at ArtReach St. Croix in Stillwater. This show features the work of Charlotte Schuld and Zac Spates. Both Schuld’s paintings and Spates’ pottery reflect a connection between art and nature in the St. Croix Valley, the Upper Midwest and beyond. The gallery, located in house dating from 1858, provides a welcoming venue to explore these nature inspired works of art.
Heading north along the river will provide a visual treat of fall colors and glimpses of river before reaching Abnet Farm Art Show & Sale.
Artists have been invited to Abnet Farm for decades to find inspiration in the beautiful, natural landscaping and lovingly restored early 20th Century barn. Established in 1960 by the late Richard Abnet, a premiere independent potter in the St. Croix Valley, the farm is now open to the public this one weekend each fall. Take the opportunity to meet and talk to this year’s invited artists: Edie Abnet, Julie Abnet, Nicholas Earl, Gloria Cantor and Pat Ward, Marce Halfmann, Phyllis Hunter, Kit Shoop, Evonne Sunram, Richard Vincent, Phil Wendt, Laura White and Toni and Micky Ziton.
Continuing along Hwy. 95 to the village of Marine on St. Croix and find a spot to park along the highway. The village will be teaming with thousands of visitors and dozens of artists for the Marine Art Fair, but continue through town and you will find, tucked along the river, Mary Jo Van Dell Riverhouse Studio. This open studio will not only feature Van Dell’s distinctive oil paintings, but she has invited several talented artists to join her and sell their jewelry, pottery and other creative works.
The construction on U.S. 8 east of Hwy. 95 will not impact your ability to reach Peter Jadoonath’s Backyard Pottery Sale, in fact the detour will take you right there. Jadoonath began his backyard pottery sale in St. Paul, and after relocating to the St. Croix Valley, he is continuing the tradition here. Joining Jadoonath are his friends Jason Trebs, Joe Singewald, Mike Helke and Sarah Dudgeon. Come for the pottery and stay for a slice of pie.
