September 15 or 16
The major art fairs that highlight both weekends of Take Me to the River offer exciting, energetic art experiences. But sometimes a more intimate art opportunity is just around the corner. September 15 or 16 could be a day to explore these subtler events.
Heart of the River: Celebrating the First 50 Years of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway is a new juried gallery exhibition at The Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson showcasing work by regional and national artists that reflects their connection to this unique natural resource that flows through our backyard. Part of the St. Croix River Associations 50th Anniversary Celebration, the exhibit opens on Friday, September 14.
Heading north along the river will provide a visual treat of fall colors and glimpses of river before crossing the new St. Croix Crossing bridge just south of Stillwater. Continue on Hwy 36 and head north on Greeley Street to Sharon Weiser Art Studio Sale.
Weiser, a native of Wisconsin, is known in Arizona and the southwest for her dramatic, larger-than-life oil paintings of cactus and other desert flora and fauna. Since moving back to the Midwest, her work has focused more on still life images found at home. Weiser will be joined at her studio by Char Neely, another painter whose work shares Weiser’s love of nature.
Backtrack on Hwy 36 and go north on Hwy 95 through downtown Stillwater and continue along the river for eight miles and you will see the hand painted Art Sale sign for Abnet Farm Art Show & Sale.
Artists have been invited to Abnet Farm for decades to find inspiration in the beautiful, natural landscaping and lovingly restored early 20th century barn. Established in 1960 by the late Richard Abnet, a premiere independent potter in the St. Croix Valley, the farm is now open to the public this one weekend each fall. Take the opportunity to meet and talk to artists Edie Abnet, Julie Abnet and Nick Earl and their guest artists.
